Opokuya plays a role who is between the extreme independence that Esi represents and the traditional housewife that indigenous culture expects. Obviously, Opokuya is a well-educated female who also has her own career, which means she is an economic independence woman same with Esi. Meanwhile, Opokuya is more tolerant compare to Esi when both of them face the divergence with their husband. She kept fighting with her husband about controlling their car every day, but she also accepts and adapts the result since she never wins. she has been looking for another way to get her own car, and she succeeded finally. In this way, I would say that Opokuya is a typical female who combine the traditional image of a housewife in Sub-Saharan Africa and modern woman who has been completely independent on family and economy. So, I think the story in “Change: A Love Story” shows a comparison through the two families of Esi and Opokuya, and them as individual. Ali Kondey is the typical person who lives in the first pool whereas Oko Sekyi stands for the people who live in the second pool. Esi Sekyi and Opokuya are the two examples of the tension between these two distinct pools. In my mind, Opokuya just inhabits in the middle space between modern culture and traditional culture whereas Esi is closer to modern culture.
