In the modern epic The Lord of the Rings and the Odyssey’s heroes are both faced with the struggle of overcoming the challenges of the hero cycle throughout the entire story. There are many traits of the hero cycle that both Odysseus and Frodo both face but these three traits are the ones that are the main things they overcome. The three traits of the hero cycle that Odysseus and Frodo overcome are near death experiences, their ultimate goal, and the road of trials.
Throughout each epic, both Frodo and Odysseus are trying to reach their ultimate goal. Their ultimate goal is the thing that they are trying to accomplish during the entire story. Odysseus’ ultimate goal is to return home back to his homeland to his wife and his son that he had never seen before. That is the reason why Odysseus kept sailing on and on. Frodo has the ring and is traveling through the wilderness, trying to get through Mordor and eventually reach Mount Doom where he is going to drop it into the lava and destroy Sauron once and for all. This shows that both Frodo and Odysseus both are trying to accomplish thing throughout the entire story which is their ultimate goal.

While Odysseus is traveling the the rest of his crew, trying to get home the get trapped by the cyclops, they are tempted by the sirens, the men get turned into pigs, and they face Scylla and Charybdis while they are sailing. While Frodo is traveling to Mordor, Frodo is attacked by many dark riders, they are chased by many goblins and a huge fire demon. They are attacked by a cave troll, they fight in many battles, Frodo is stabbed, Gollum betrays, and he is stabbed by a huge spider. This shows that both Frodo and Odysseus face many trials throughout the entire story which definitely adds to the time that it takes to achieve their ultimate
