The infection typically occurs following oral surgery, oral trauma, and in patients with poor dental hygiene. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is characterized in the initial stages by soft-tissue swelling of the perimandibular area. Direct spread into the adjacent tissues occurs over time, along with development of fistulas (sinus tracts) that discharge purulent material containing granules with a yellow sulfurlike appearance termed sulfur granules. Invasion of the cranium or the bloodstream may occur if the disease is left untreated. Once in the tissue, the bacteria causes an abscess, producing a hard, red to reddish-purple lump, often on the jaw, from which comes the condition's common name, "lumpy jaw.” Eventually, the abscess breaks through the skin surface to produce a draining sinus tract (Vyas, 2013). The following case study identifies the unique diagnostic criteria and treatment of a patient presenting with the signs and symptoms of Cervicofacial

The inflammation process desperately tried to break down the offending foreign object in the extraction site that could not be destroyed. As he cleaned out the medicament he had to extract hardened dark brown oily pieces and yellowed-tan pieces out of the tissues. The dentist later told me it was the worst mess he had ever seen. My body had tried over time to break down and rid itself of this substance but it was impossible.…

I will, with instructor consolation, select one fungus to focus on that causes a health condition, preferably related to oral health. This selection will be geared towards my academic interest in biology as a pre-health student, and more specifically a pre-dental student. I will then compose a review paper after reading and researching more about said fungus. This review will include an up-to-date summary of what is known about this fungus and the related disease, with emphasis on the most recent publications. This will be different from the standard coursework for this class because it is primarily lab based, so this will give me the opportunity to do research on a specific fungus and will help me related it to the field I am interested in…

Candida overgrowth can also develop in the esophagus, and this is called Candida esophagitis, or esophageal candidiasis. Candida infections of the mouth and throat are uncommon among adults who are otherwise healthy.…
