Certainty

Today`s society has persuaded the majority of American to believe that if you are certain in an idea or scenario than nothing can hult it, which is a valuable concept. To believe in yourself can truly push people to new heights to do things never considered before. In the case of the Wright Brothers, their predecessors could not fathom the idea of man being able to fly, however Wilbur and Orville were certain they could find a way, and they did. If they were uncertain and doubted themselves then men would have never had a more larger opportunity to take to the skies. William Lyon Phelps stated “You can get yourself to accomplish virtually anything, including those things that other people are certain are impossible”, and he is correct. My mother always tells me that I am my own worst enemy and if I believe in myself than I am the only one holding myself back. People do miraculous things everyday that some may believe to be inconceivable. Jackie Robinson was the first African American man to integrate America's favorite pass time. During his era a majority of people were certain that no “black” man could play a “white” man's sport, however through encouragement and his own confidence Jackie did the unthinkable. He was certain in his abilities and he knew he could go against society and prove them wrong, and because of his triumph it opened doors for more understanding between race. Certainty comes with a confidence that defines us as an individual, it engenders people to appear strong and desirable. To be certain in oneself is a trait most wish to have, but are unable to obtain. My sister ,for instance, knows that the medical field an evident aspect of her future and is pursuing her calling, and that is a quality I aspire to have. The feeling of uncertainty is to lack conviction, to be afraid and to disbelieve. Throughout a human`s life they go through a roller coaster of certainty and doubt. People tend to doubt who they are or what they know, in lack of confidence. The term pessimistic is term used to describe someone who believes in the worse possible outcome and to aspect the worst. This is a consequence of when someone lives their life in immersed in doubt. Although Bertrand Russell expressed that “entertain[ing] our opinions with some measure of doubt” is a positive attribute because society “shouldn't wish people dogmatically to believe any philosophy.” Russell is explaining that doubt is to be human, and to periodically check ourselves from becoming a society in which we ignore the individuality. It is wrong for a society to be so certain in their own opinions that they oppress those that negate their thoughts, but in false certainty they preach their opinions as though they cannot be wrong or doubted by others. In recent times the L.G.B.T movement becomes more predominant in society, angering those that oppose and certainly believe in their oppositions. Which makes them appear arrogant through their certainty. Certainty has the potential to stunt humanity.
