Censorship that occurs in many classrooms is that of banning books. Banning books occurs here in America all the time. The former chairwoman of the English department at Lyman Hall High School and the assistant professor of social work at the Southern Connecticut State University urge the community to resist the banning of books. While Susan Goms and Steven Tomczak also professionals in the English department believe the banning of works cause student to lose the critical thinking portions of education. They believe that reading and talking about controversial things allows children to know what is right from wrong. Wallingford schools have been having this problem from most of 2015. They once had an effect to ban The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is a coming of age book. It attracted attention across the world. The person that did not want the books, J.P. Bloat became a school board member. It was taken off the shelves until a parent petitioned for it to come back. Gomes believes that books like the Perks of Being a Wallflower allows students to read about what they are going through and make the right decisions to go along with it. Anne varroa Leader is a teacher at Moran Middle School believes that censorship of books that children could benefit from being just plain wrong. In response to the perks she says that she and her daughter communicate more and have a better understanding of each other.
