Censorship is the act to cover up obscene images, words, or ideas on a piece of work that may upset a person(s). According to Frank (2014), censoring paintings and sculptures originated Eastern Europe during the ruling of the Byzantine Empire (p.92). This censorship controversy began over religious artwork revealing too much nudity. One controversy piece of artwork that is given as an example in the book is Chris Ofili’s Holy Virgin Mary. As stated by Frank (2014), the mayor of New York found the work offensive to Roman Catholicism because of the way it portrayed Mary, and because the piece had elephant dung attached to it (p.93).
