CELTIC MYTHOLOGY
We know them for their skirt wearing, alcohol drinking, and funny talking but do we know the irish for their older culture, the celtic culture. Now before we get into too much detail let’s start with the basics. The celts were located around Ireland and parts of Europe. The celtic culture presumably started around 800-450 B.C. The population is vague and we are unsure, but we do know their religion. The celts were polytheistic, which means they believed in more than one god. Which bring us too something else they had more than one of, which is values. The celts had 3 huge values which are honor, hospitality, and loyalty. The cetls value this value so much they are even known for it. “ The Irish are famous for their hospitality, which dates back to olden times.” (Countries and Their Cultures, # 8 Relationships). The celts believed that being hospital would even bring good luck. “It was believed that turning away a stranger would bring bad luck and a bad name to the household” ( Countries and Their Cultures, #8 Relationships). As we can see they believed very strongly about being kind to strangers; no matter what time it was even. ”The front doors of houses were commonly left open at meal times. Which is a story about a man who had 3 daughters and he sells them each for money, then later on he has a son who wants to meet his sisters so he goes on a great adventure where he shows hospitality and so do the places he stops at to rest. The first evidence in the story that shows hospitality; is when the boy sets off on his adventure and meets a hungry traveler. “He went away, and walked on till he was tired and hungry; and then he sat down to eat the bread that his mother had given him, when a red-haired man came up and asked him for something to eat. ‘Sit down here,’ said the boy. He sat down, and the two ate till there was not a crumb of the bread left.” (The Weaver's Don and the Giant of the White Hill, line 15). This line shows that the celts will share no matter how much they have, and that's just the celtic way. Then we see the evidence again when the boy comes to a castle that he believes his sister is living in with her husband. The boy stays the night because he is the husbands wifes brother but the husband show even more hospitality in the morning. “ Next morning, when the man of the castle was going off in the form of a ram, he turned to the boy and asked, ‘Will you stay a few days in my castle? You are welcome.’" ( The Weaver's Don and the Giant of the White Hill, line 26). This line shows that the celts don't show kindness for just one night but for as many as it
