Celtic Bog Bodies

Decapitated, dismembered, hung bodies. Sounds like a horror movie right? Close, but no, these are just the remains of Celtic bog people These people were either religious sacrifices, punishment or just a simple murder cover-up. These bogs were the epitome of the mummification of bodies. These people were the unfortunate ones who found themselves in that situation, but offer us a new insight on the life of the ancient Celts. These bogs have many different aspects that make this wetland stand out from others. A wetland is an area located near or above a water table. They also have a diverse amount of vegetation around the area. On the contrary, bogs are filled with water from only rain. They also are dominated by peat moss/sphagnum. The …show more content…
He lived in the Celtic region during the Iron Age which is around 800 BC to 43 AD. Old Croghan stood at least 6’6 suggesting that he was a native to Celts His body was found with, repeated cuts/stabs and his head and legs were dismembered. Scientists and CSI all conclude that he was either a punished criminal or human sacrifice( Bog Bodies of the Iron age). There was a defensive wound located on his upper left arm (Patel & Lobell). They also found hazel branches tied around his arms as a restraint. The stabs show that he was stabbed in the chest multiple times, struck in the head and then his head and legs were chopped off. In his teeth, the scientists came to another conclusion. His last supper was cereal and buttermilk a delicacy back then (Patel & Lobell). A strange discovery was made on his chest. For an odd reason, his nipples were cut off. After historians examined ancient Celtic cultures, it was found that a king's nipples were sucked to show a submission and kingship (Patel & Lobell). My hypotheses on Old Croghan man’s passing was that he was a nobleman to the chief of his sanction. He tried to commit treason by overthrowing the chief. His plan was then foiled and the chief cut his nipples off so he could never be king and then dismembered his body and lodged it into a bog as a religious sacrifice to a

Bears and Coins:The Iconography of Protection in Late Roman Infant Burials, written by Nina Crummy analyzes the sites of a small group of infant burials found within Britain. These date to early c.e., during the Roman rule of the region. While the actual archaeological evidence found within these graves is interesting enough, it is in Crummy’s analysis of the items that is of greater significance. Using these uncovered items, Crummy creates two groups to examine, and her theories regarding how the carefully chosen tokens show a parental attachment to the deceased, despite their young age. With the aforementioned archaeological evidence, combined with known beliefs of early Roman-Britain, Crummy is able to accurately display her ideas about the meaning of childhood and parenthood within a society with high infant mortality.…

The evidence found here matches many of the criteria Turner listed as evidence for cannibalism. The combination of cut marks, lack of respect and proper burial, distinct burning patterns, and disarticulation of remains all point to deliberate processing and consumption of the bodies. The lack of canine tooth marks and the “the light color and excellent surface condition of the bones” indicates that the meat was removed through stewing and boiling and was not scavenged by wild animals after death. On top of the osteological evidence, the discovery of a meat processing tool kit found in the context of the human remains in feature 13 indicates the intentional removal of flesh. After conducting blood residue analysis on several of the tools, two sharp cutting flakes tested positive for human blood.…

In the Mystery Cemetery excavation, all attributes and artifacts are greatly interconnected and useful in order to form logical inferences and observations regarding age, sex, and status. Quick assumptions from individual artifacts would be impossible seeing that one object leads to another, which then correlates to my conclusions for every grave site. The most important grave site that allows all of my observations to be plausible is Burial 10. Because of Burial 10, I am able to determine the sex and status of each burial. Differentiating between age is a matter of skeleton size and its correlation with the type of artifact each are buried with.…

The Egyptians practiced the art of mummifying their dead for 3,000 years or more in the belief that the soul would be reunited with the body in the afterlife, so the body had to be kept intact. A mummy is a dead body in which some of the soft tissue has been preserved along with the bones. Usually this means it was specially embalmed or preserved for burial, but sometimes natural conditions alone freeze, dry out, or otherwise prevent the body from decaying by inhibiting the growth of microbes. The most carefully prepared Egyptian mummies date from about 1000 B.C., but the earliest ones discovered are much older. Sacred animals, such as cats and crocodiles, were also mummified.…
