Cell Therapy Persuasive Essay

Medical advances have been improving rapidly in the past century. Scientists are now discovering new ways to treat diseases that were previously, deemed incurable. Shortages in donors has always been a problem in the hospital world and even when there is a donor, it doesn’t necessarily mean the recipients body will accept the donation. Stem cells have been studied for decades, however, recently they are coming out with new ways to apply these stem cells into curing genetic diseases by correcting their abnormal genes. With the concept of gene therapy mixed with the practice of cell therapy, scientists can figure out a way to replace abnormal DNA with stem cells that have corrected genes and cure genetic diseases such as sickle cell, immunodeficiencies, and possibly cancer. Once scientists figure out the ins and outs of cell multiplication and how to alter the genes to be able to perform what is needed (although this is another ethical issue to come up) then several lives around the world will finally be treated and saved. The downside to future explorations and creations is that treatment may be very costly and some individuals could possibly not be able to afford the type of treatments provided. There would have to be a series of examinations and a team of experts to be able to culture an entire organ for or from a patient. If the future does not lead us to the cure for genetic diseases anytime soon, then stem cells are still a viable source to be able to provide pharmaceutical companies as a source of testing rather than having to do them on animals.
