When children are born, they take on the characteristics portrayed to them by their family. In Cecil, Gloria and Louis’s case, characteristic portrayed by Cecil were not always agreed on. Together as a family unit there was some differences and turmoil, especially between Cecil and Louis. The family unit functions as a safe haven and shelter from the outside world. Family is there to protect its members, to love them, and to provide each individual with the necessary basic needs. However, Louis did not see his father as a fighter. He felt his father did not provide security, both physically and psychologically. His actions showed that he felt his father was doing nothing to protect them as a family from the unjust world around them. In fact, Louis portrayed his father as someone who was conforming to society instead of standing up for rights and justice of his own kind. He showed little respect for his fathers beliefs and acted upon his own beliefs. When the father or mother of a family works, they provide the family with the monetary needs. Although Cecil, worked hard to provide for his family, his occupation was not always viewed as a positive one. Cecil did not agree with his son’s beliefs or actions. Elvira (2009) explains that “ A functional family lets people define themselves. Individual differences are appreciated even celebrated”.
