Since the beginning of time, there is evidence that man has tried to make his home a reflection of his personal lifestyle.
Take the caveman, or should I say, cavewoman. Granted, there are not too many ways you can rearrange a bonfire, but cavewoman was not deterred. She gathered up different colored wood to coordinate with her dirt floors, and threw in dried grasses to match her animal skin dress. After awhile, she noticed that the brown and gray stone walls of the cave were becoming pretty boring to look at, and cavewoman wanted to spruce things up a bit.

So cavewoman had to get creative. Since necessity is the mother of invention, she devised a substance out of pulverized stones, dirt and marsh bog and created the first paint. She immediately applied her goop to the cave walls and created colorful primitive drawings of her family at work and at play––and you thought the wheel was the first remarkable invention.
As man advanced, so did his creative decorative styling. Think about the Egyptians, the ancient Greeks, the Moors, the American Colonists and the Spanish Colonists. Helen C. Rountree’s book displays the interactions between Native Americans and English settlers from a never-before-seen perspective. Contrary to the Europeanized works published over the years that favor the Europeans and excludes the Native Americans, Rountree chooses to take a different road that is seldom traversed. Instead of using the mundane dialogue that is taught throughout grade school she has come from the Native Americans’ point-of-view. In doing this, use of the Native’s language is seen throughout the book, alongside Native’s take on the Europeans. Helen Rountree calls attention to the fact that a great majority of mainstream sources involving natives and Englishmen's relationship were extremely biased and non-inclusive of the Natives in their writings.…

Art and particularly Western Art is being inspired and is a response to its past or to another culture: there is a continuous inspiration and exchange creating new art movement and works. This habit is quite old and existed even during the Greek archaic period: for exemple the Orientalizing style that from the VIII and VII century BC notable in Corinthian Greek poetry was a direct influence by Middle-Eastern art and style at the time (Cook, R.M., Dupont, P. 1998. East Greek Pottery. London: Routledge.). The “creativity” of this art movement was just the reinterpretation of other art styles.…

Presently, it is hard to find people who actually have an original and unique sense of style. For example, young girls will rarely ever show off their interests and hobbies. They would rather express attitude in the way they dress. I must admit that it is difficult to avoid the temptation of dressing like everybody else. Clothes that are meant to be childish and innocent have been transformed into a grown-up and sexy style.…

What do you make of the irony that women were often treated quite well in Indigenous traditions and yet, today, Native American women are the group of women that experience the highest incidence of domestic violence? My reaction: It upsets me to think about the violence that women are experiencing throughout all cultures. For Native American women to be experiencing the highest domestic violence I feel at fault. If it weren 't for colonization and the “whites” invading the Native American territory the concept of women being less than men would never have been introduced to the Native American culture.…

No place better exemplifies bricolages than a shared, college bedroom. Bricolages are “compositions designed by combining pre-existing designs” which “express their creator’s identity and worldview, consciously or unconsciously” (Huhtamo, Meeting 1, 20). Bricolages are analyzed through semiotics, the analysis of culture through interpretations of signs (Huhtamo, “Basic Concepts” 257). College is where many first experience living with people who are not family.
