In the early 20th century, Europe was home to a jumbled network of coalitions that pitted state against state. Pressures grew rapidly as nations snapped up any region they could get their hands on, built great armies and navies, recognized their enemies, and organized for the huge war that was looking more likely every day.
There had already been numerous small hostilities in the century's first 14 years that overwrought the continent's harmony even further. By 1914, Europe was divided into two antagonistic camps and it would only take a little trigger for the circumstances to explode into war.
As well as looking for protection in the extent of their armies, the nations of Europe sought protection by making alliances.

• Entente Cordiale (8th April’ 1904):
The Entente Cordiale was the concluding result of the foreign policy of France's Foreign Minister Théophile Delcassé who thought that a special understanding among France and Britain would give France some security in contrast to German aggression and its increasing amount of European alliances.
In relation to European actions in Africa, the Entente Cordiale specified that Britain would be free to act in Egypt, whilst France would be free to follow its intentions in Morocco.
The Los Islands, off Guinée Française (French Guinea), were ceded to France by Britain, and the border of Nigeria with Afrique Occidentale Française (French West Africa), and gave France some control over the Upper Gambia.
The Entente Cordiale was an effective end to the mutual resentment that the France and Britain had shown over their strategy of colonization in Africa. Italy fused with the group in 1882. There was a fear about a possible attack from France and the Alliance required powerful friends to help defend it. The three countries promised to support each other if any of them should be attacked.
The three nations renewed their pact in 1887, 1907, and 1912. Each country, however, appeared to be extra interested in serving itself and achieving power and territory than it was in assisting its allies.
