After the Chesapeake Affair, Thomas Jefferson served two terms as the president of the United States from 1801 through 1809. Furthermore, Jefferson took responsibility as the third president of the United States to release the Embargo Act in 1807, to pursue foreign powers such as Europeans to respect American rights and neutrality. “The First Barbary Acts,” was a result that led to the main cause of The Embargo Act of 1807. The social classes that were most affected were merchants and farmers. Although they had the disadvantage of not being able to trade with foreign powers, merchants and especially farmers were able to benefit from the Industrial revolution that was taking place. However, the Embargo Act was still in force, the Industrial revolution of the nineteenth century, also known as the 1800s, merchants and farmers benefited in multiple ways from this Revolution. For instance, farmers were able to increase and improve their production and transportation of crops. Grateful to the industrial revolution, farmers were able to boost production. With new inventions such as the steamboat, cotton gin, and the spinning wheel, work that farmers would do with their hands was now being replaced by the changes and advancements that the Industrial Revolution brought. The same year of 1807 that the Embargo Act was passed, Robert Fulton introduced the world’s first steamboat. The steamboat made the transportation of goods and crops much more convenient and faster. By being able to produce surplus of crops, economic growth was magnificent! Without the production of the steamboat by Robert Fulton , farmers would only produce enough to feed their family but due to this invention, market for crops was expanded. War of 1812 was because of the Embargo Act that Jefferson passed but rivals of Thomas Jefferson indicated the faults in his actions. For example an article from Monticello quoted that in 1812, the Alexandria Gazette, a popular newspaper of that time, stated, "...the rejection of that treaty, the responsibility of which act Mr. Jefferson has boldly taken to himself, has been the fruitful source of all the evils, which we have suffered from embargoes and non-importation acts, and may soon suffer from war.” Overall, citizens of America blamed the Embargo Act for being the main reason that led America to declare the war of 1812 against the “Greatest Naval Power of Great Britain.” Furthermore, in order to win the war with Great Britain, United State’s automatic response was to attack Canada first and then secondly, they carried on to attacking a British colony.
In conclusion, the Embargo Act 1807 restricted all trade with European nations. The Embargo Act did not turn out the way Thomas Jefferson imagined. Instead, The French and British who once used to rely on the United States, now had found out they could trade without any reliance from U.S. Jefferson expected that France and Great Britain would realize they had no economy without the United States, however
