Many parents will not mean to place stress on their child but it still often happens. Parents all would like their children to be the best, pressuring them to always practice and some even becoming disappointed if their child does not meet their expectations. Parents often have a growth mindset and frequently say that there is always room for improvement and even though this may be true young athletes will not see it this way, the mindset of the athlete would likely be that they are not doing well enough even if they have gotten better, it is still not good enough in their eyes. This generally happens with parents that are too involved in the child’s sport and do not know when to draw the line. Overbearing parents are another cause of stress in the young athlete. Sometimes referred to as helicopter parents, always lingering around their children, refusing to let them prosper or fail on their own. Helicopter parents watch their child hoping to protect them from pain, disappointment, and failure for means of prospering (Cline & Fay, 339). Time after time coaches push children too hard and may become upset if the child does not succeed, even if a coach just wants his the athletes he is coaching to do good so he or she looks like a good coach, this will still affect the athlete, they will not only feel like they let themselves down but they will have let the coach down as well (Stricker, 2015). A coach should support the effort an athlete puts in by direct involvement, this will help the athlete become less worried about how they do in general and more interested in having fun and being appreciated. Coaches should always encourage and motivate rather than make an athlete feel like they are not doing the very best that is possible. Coaches play a huge role in the young athlete’s life, they help them grow as a person.
