Police officers are meant to be seen as protectors of the peace. Lately, they have been seen as the corruptors of the peace. The ones who want to put us away, possibly for life. This has put a nonstop stress on many, who are involved with such officers. It’s not always good to point fingers, but without knowing why police officers do this, we cannot fix it. Trusting the ones who protect us is one of the biggest issues in our society. We have to assume that the police force is going to do the right thing no matter what because if we assume the opposite, then we lose our protectors. Author Juha Kaariainen and his cowriters said, the Code of Silence is believed to be a myth to some, but others are not so sure (86). The Code of Silence is essentially an unwritten code police officers unofficially follow; it states that they will keep their own secrets as well as other officers’ if they decide to break the law. However, this was a start to solving such a problem because knowing how police corruption occurs will help classify what we can do to prevent it. Looking at individual’s personality traits will help determine their behaviors on the job. Law enforcer’s designated jurisdiction will determine if they will be trusting of their citizens and their higher ranking officers.
