Deforestation is a curse since Prehistory, it leads to many consequences in different fields such as the environment or the society. Forests are known to be the planet lungs, how could their destruction impact environment? To understand better this phenomenon, an overview of the areas deforestation around the world, its history and main causes is essential. Then, focusing on a specific area, the Amazonia, is useful to explain the deforestation consequences.
I-Overview of the deforestation phenomenon
a.Causes and history
Only 30% of the original forests remain today. The deforestation’s main cause is anthropogenic. Indeed, human activity impact on the biodiversity for a long time ago. Most often, multiple processes work simultaneously …show more content…
Indeed, in Europe, medieval forests have been reduced because of the needs to food forges, chimneys, ovens… Moreover, the expansion of agriculture’s ground reduced 15% of the forests’ surface in the end of XIXth century. After, researches have been made in order to reduce deforestation. They allowed to profitable coal mining and to use fossil fuels. So since the end of XIXth century, forests increased again. In the 90, nearly 70% of deforested lands have been converted to farmland. For example, in tropical area, deforested lands are used for the cultivation of tobacco, soy and oil palm. Furthermore, the slash and burn agricultural technique is used, that is the land are burned to created more …show more content…
Indeed, soybean production and industrial-scale cattle ranching increase the phenomenon in Amazonia, whereas, in Borneo and Sumatra, the tropical forest are transformed into palm tree plantations for producing bio-fuels.
Poverty can also be cited as a deforestation cause, but it’s not directly linked to the phenomenon, it’s called an underlying cause. Indeed, poverty make people do a migration near forest frontiers where they’re engaged for slashing and burning forest. Other underlying causes can also be given such as state policies, agricultural subsidies, tax breaks timber concessions and global economics factors. Although, in Africa, Asia and South America, rainforests are considered as home for a huge number of people, local and national governments continue to develop the rainforests exploitation.
Finally, another factor can be named: the access to technology. Indeed, using inefficient technology increases collateral damage in the deforestation’s vicinity, whereas, using new technology urges the forest clearing.
