Loneliness is a problem that many individuals struggle with today in society, actually, it has been a problem for people ever since the early 1800’s and most likely since before that. In the Romantic age, many people focused on nature and often secluded themselves in nature because they believed that it would help them think and also that it would be a good inspiration. In the novel Frankenstein, romantic Mary Shelley portrays the idea that loneliness is caused by how one interacts with those around him, or rather with himself, but even more so by one’s outward appearance based on the judgment of the people that surround him.

One can become famous and known by the whole nation solely based on what they look like. Shelley made this very evident in her novel. In the novel, Victor describes the monster by saying “His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips.” (Shelley 43). This description is one not of a normal human, no, this is the description of a monster. This description can give the reader a pretty vivid picture of the monster and just how hideous he actually is. Now, one could imagine seeing such a creature, wandering around their town, just like a normal person, but they looked like a monster. They, without a doubt, would be scared out of their minds. This is very important to realize because that is exactly what happened to the monster. This is very clear in the passage that was earlier quoted about when the monster went to go save the girl that was drowning, but then the monster pulled her out and then the monster was attacked by a human because he looked like a monster. This was a major factor in causing the monster’s loneliness because everyone that he tried to connect with, help, or even just talk to, they all shunned him and ran in
