One of the most common issues we see in America is child abuse and neglect. What is child abuse? Child abuse is when the parent or guardian fail to protect the child from injury. Child abuse is a very real and prominent problem today. The impact of child abuse affects more than one’s childhood, as the psychological and physical injuries often follow them into adult life. In most cases children are defenseless against abuse, are relying on their parents, or guardians to care for them and are unable to protect themselves. Child neglect is sometimes also included in reports of child abuse to cover instances of malnutrition, desertion, and irresponsible care of a child's safety. “When reported, child abuse cases are complicated by inadequate foster care services and a legal system that has trouble accommodating the suggestible nature of children. (Hay, 1996)”
Child abuse and neglect occur in different situations, for a range of reasons. Children rarely experience one form of child abuse at a time. Emotional abuse of a child may be as harmful as physical abuse and neglect, while sexual abuse often occurs with other forms of maltreatment. In 2008 the Children’s Defense Fund reported that each day in America 2,421 children are confirmed as abused or neglected, 4 children are killed, and 78 babies die before their first birthday.
The most common form of child abuse we see is physical, 17.2% of children are victims of physical abuse. This form of abuse includes injuries that come from hitting, whipping, beating, biting, kicking, or anything that causes harm to a child’s body. We need approaches that understand child abuse is something harmful and reinforced everyday by long standing beliefs that this okay. Society must come together to create a safe place for a child. That’s why it is important for schools, hospitals, or wherever a child feels safe to educate people on what is right as far as how children should be treated. There are numerous resources available specifically for preventing child abuse. Just entering child abuse in the internet multiple websites pop up showing that there is some way to help.
