The causes of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, are sort of the same as some other disabilities. Like the learning disability, ADHD can be caused by either a brain injury of some type or can be genetic. Other factors can play in what might cause ADHD. Some researchers believe that tobacco and alcohol use, before the child’s birth, is another reason why some children have this disorder. “Most experts believe the condition is due to inherent differences in the way the brains of individuals with ADHD function” (Smith & Tyler, 2010, p. 208). Though this statement might be true, the causes of ADHD are all related to the child’s neurological functioning. Students with ADHD might show certain characteristics that are most visible for adults to notice. Some students might not be able to focus on a certain subject being taught, or can’t stay sit still for a prolonged period. Though these are some characteristics of a student with ADHD; some adults, especially teachers, might come to believe that the student doesn’t want to learn, or the child does want to do what he/she wants to. By doing this, the teacher can better understand why a student is acting a certain way. Teachers must be patient and emotionally stable around these students. Getting mad at a student because he/she keeps blurting out answers; isn’t going to help him/her comprehend why the teacher is angry with him//her. Peers can try doing the same process by first understanding that their fellow peers might not think the same way as they do. So, they need to have patience with these students, if they are answering or talking when they shouldn’t.
