Before starting this project I came across an article from Huffington Post called Beyond the Conservative/Liberal Catholic Divide, written by Matthew N. Schmalz. My first time reading this article I thought that Schmalz was just writing about the different stereotypes in the catholic religion and that it is possible to be a liberal catholic, which originally sparked my interest. As a liberal I never knew that we could even participate in the Catholic Church, due to my views on Gay Marriage and abortion. Little did I know that there was so much more than just another thing that liberals and conservatives con not come to similar terms on from a local Catholic Church. As a community Saint Thomas Aquinas University Parish practices forgiveness and acceptance for some more than others.…

Michael Kearney is the youngest American to attend college. At the young and impressionable age of 11, Michael graduated from the University of California-Santa Cruz in 1989. Kearney was first homeschooled by his parents, who enrolled him in college at age ten in an attempt to bring some "normalcy" into his life. By most social standards Kearney is still considered a child but yet he is doing quite adult things. That sparks the question, at what point does one stop being a child and become an adult?…

As stated in several articles with research conducted, the average child in America begins school at the age of three. A child may begin to mature at a around 12 years old, unlike Antonio who starts school at the age of seven. Though he started school later than the average child, he matured at a rate that subsequently affected and changed his life. Coming of age by the process of maturing is an important and well addressed topic in the novel Bless Me, Ultima. Rudolfo Anaya addresses this throughout the book to focus on Antonio Marez’s coming of age as he experiences both harmony and conflict during his upbringing.…

The progression from adolescence to adulthood is seen differently in every religion. Normally, it presents new responsibilities for the child and brings them into a new stage of life. For Catholics, the coming of age is celebrated through the sacrament of Confirmation, around the age fifteen. In Buddhism, a boy is represented at a service when they are just under the age of twenty and become initiated into the temple. For Jews, it is marked by the turning of age thirteen when they are released from the responsibility of their parents and begin leading a life for themselves, one in which they are accountable for their own actions.…

I chose to follow a friend to a non-denominational sect of religion at a local church called, Iglesia Cristiana Misericordia in Laredo, Texas. Liberal Catholics will tell you that Catholics are leaving because they disagree with the church’s teaching on women priests, divorce, the bishops’ interference in American politics, etc. One of the reasons there in such disagreement is that we tend to think that everyone leaves for the same reason our friends, relatives and acquaintances have left. We fail to recognize that different people leave for different reasons. People who leave to join Protestant churches do so for different reasons than those who become unaffiliated.…
