Mr. Cintrón told Luis, “Son, you must follow the judge’s instructions. Like she said, next time you get in trouble, she’s going to treat you like an adult, and I think you know what that means. Hard times, no breaks” (page 443). Mr. Cintón doesn’t want his son to end up in trouble so he explains the negative effects his actions could have on him. This is a significant occurrence because his dad is showing that he strongly cares about him and that he isn’t disappointed as much as he was. Although, he will be if Luis continues to get in trouble. In the end, when Luis is searching for Naomi’s replacement hubcap for her car, he calls his father. To inform “...him where he was and what he was doing,” because he remembered his 10 o’clock curfew (page 446). This call shows that he has gained respect for his father’s wishes, and shows the growth of their bond and relationship. This reveals that Luis is a young man in search of someone to be proud of him and show him that he is loved. He values that feeling because when his mother used to tell him “that she was proud of him and loved him” (page 445), it made him feel loved and needed. With his mother gone, this emotional need is now needed from his father. Luis’ father was constantly unavailable and didn’t have the time to comfort him the way his mother could.
