One way it will be beneficial to employees is when it comes to pay. Many jobs that fall under a union contract are paid significantly more than non-unionized jobs. Having a contract in place is a way to guarantee employees specific hourly wages and cost of living pay increases. Most union contracts are negotiated for a set amount of years, guaranteeing employees a specified pay increase annually for a cost of living increase.
Another benefit is that “labor union members are more likely to feel secure in their job as com- pared with non-members because one goal of organized labor is to ensure job security for its members” (Flavin & Shufeldt, 2016). When employees have the protection of a union, they feel more secure in the job. The fear or losing your job due to unfair termination or layoff is significantly reduced when you have the protection of a union to represent you in these situations. The purpose of creating this alliance is to join together as a mass to protect ourselves, and the generations that follow. The objective for forming a labor union is to fight for employee right, better working conditions and to be heard when it comes to management issues. “The objective of improved working conditions extends to the provision of health care and allowance for vacations for union members. As part of the improved working conditions, unions seek job security for their members by demanding that employers to agree to pay laid-off workers or guarantee an annual wage at the time of employment” (Davoren, 2017). If the workforce joins together to unionize, will be treated fairly, working conditions will be improved, and our rights as employees will be protected.
