Case Study: Rana Plaza

Improved Essays
What occurred in Rana Plaza was horrible and unethical. I am amazed it’s not illegal. People’s life should not be endangered just so companies can make a profit and get clothes at a cheaper price. The woman who was responsible for the safety conditions was never told to report papers that showed the conditions of the building. Owners of textile factories and the companies ordering clothing from these factories are both responsible for being unethical. The Rana Plaza owner, for one, went beyond the legal limits of building size. He had created an 8 level building that was meant to hold only offices, not heavy

Factories have been placed in these countries by massive companies seeking cheap outsourcing, usually in the fields of textiles, footwear, and agriculture. Such companies or brands include Nike, H&M, Wal-Mart, Forever 21, and Victoria’s Secret. Wal-Mart is often criticized for their Bangladesh factories, as these buildings have previously collapsed and killed workers. Regardless, “in the hierarchy of jobs in poor countries, sweltering at a sewing machine isn’t the bottom” (Kristof, N. 2009). Working in a sweatshop factory is at least more comfortable and less dangerous than working in mines or scouring smoldering…

One critique of gentrification is that it does not assimilate the lower class into the new middle class environment. Lee (2008) sights that there is a poor evidence base for 'positive gentrification’. She believes that although the new middle classes' desire for diversity and difference, they tend to self-segregate. “Gentrification is part of an aggressive, revanchist ideology designed to retake the inner city for the middle classes” (Lee, p.1, 2008). Lee highlights a major critic of gentrification, the displacement of the lower-class.…

Fellow Americans, Today, America thrives on the ideals and values of independence, humanity, and freedom. Despite the many historic occurrences of oppression and inequality within our nation, some of which continue to this day, I believe the many people who continue to fight against injustices and for the rights of others represent what a truly means to be an American. Regardless of the strides our society has made, however, some of the crimes of the past persist in secret and unknown, preventing awareness of the problem and a call to action: Over 200 years have past since the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade, and yet slavery, the peerless transgression of human rights, continues to eclipse the idealistic vision of a principled global…

In an ethical manner, it is not morally right to endanger another person 's life in order to make a profit, as it creates more harms than benefits. Companies are dumping dangerous and hazardous products on overseas markets and it should be in the company’s best interest to consider the health and safety of the people and animals. Therefore, the companies acted immorally by dumping harmful products.
In essence, dumping refers to the procedure of exporting products that have been banned dangerous in the US, to other countries, mainly third world countries. The harms clearly outweigh the benefits, as these manufactures are knowingly dumping dangerous products available to third world countries.…
