At Parkwood most of the prevalent “disabling conditions” are not physical, but mental. Specifically in the adolescent unit, depression and anxiety appear to be the most common amongst the population being served. There are a large variety of programs offered both hospital wide and on the unit which the Therapeutic Recreation team strategically uses to reduce or eliminate these conditions. Majority of the programs tend to focus on self-growth and improvement, as well as creating a better self image. Teaching ways to express emotions and thoughts in a healthy manner as well as coping strategies are also some of the major focuses when working with this population.
