The subject, Papa Bear, is an Asian-American that is a 5’4” 48-years old male that weighs approximately 240 pounds. He was diagnosed with high cholesterol in August of 2015 and is currently taking atorvastatin. Near end of August, Mr. Bear was in a minor car accident that caused him to have neck and back pain, and is now on metaxalone, cyclobenzaprine, and meloxicam. Bear was prescribed three different medication to help alleviate his muscle pain that he experience. For his first medication, the doctor had prescribed 800 mg of metaxalone in forms of tablets that needs to be taken twice a day. Metaxalone works mainly as a muscle relaxant but it treats discomfort associated with acute painful muscle conditions along with rest, physical therapy, or other measures (Metaxalone, n.d.). There has yet to be an explanation to how metaxalone actually works, but it is said that it may be due to general central nervous system depression. Some adverse effect that metaxalone causes are drowsiness, dizziness, headache, irritability, nausea, vomiting, and upset stomach. Mr. Bear has only felt dizziness from the drug for the first week of taking it. The second drug Mr. Bear was prescribed was 10 mg of cyclobenzaprine in the forms of tablets to take one before bed. Cyclobenzaprine is another muscle relaxant like metaxalone, but works by stopping any sensation of pain that goes to your brain. Cyclobenzaprine is a 5-HT2 receptor antagonist that inhibits the serotonergic system in the spinal cord. Some common adverse effects are blurred vision, dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, and dryness of mouth. So far, Mr. Bear has only felt light headed after taking the medication. For the last medication, the doctor has prescribed 15 mg of meloxicam in forms of tablets to take once every morning. Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that works to reduce the hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body (Meloxicam, n.d.). However, meloxicam is mainly prescribed for any types of arthritis. How it works is that meloxicam is blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. Cyclo-oxygenase produce different chemicals in the body which are mainly known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are what causes pains, swelling, and inflammation and this is what meloxicam inhibits.
