A sudden economic downturn can pose serious threats to the survival of any company. This is the situation with ABC company as stated in the case study description. Typical in these situations, upper management issues an urgent edict to slash operating costs company wide. Individual managers are expected to act swiftly to achieve cost reduction goals. This case study review and analysis will focus on the new mission of the ABC Company security and safety department to reduce costs. This goal will be achieved by implement a new security and safety program. The ABC security and safety department is currently operating under a traditional proprietary plan. These steps will be the responsibility of the new security manager, Ms. Smith. Step one will be to work with senior management to authorize a new hybrid plan which will include using contract labor to provide the bulk of the security officers. The security director, Ms. Smith, needs to show to senior management the advantages of a hybrid plan vs the current plan with respect to potential cost savings. In the second step, the basic requirements for the hybrid program need to be developed by the new security director and approved my senior management. In the third step, the new hybrid program needs to be put out for bid to several qualified security services companies. The security manager needs identify several qualified security service companies (SSC) and provide an RFP, or request for proposal, to the selected security companies. The security manager will then take proposals to senior management for review and final selection. Once the SSC has been chosen, the security manager will then work closely to implement, monitor, and oversee the new plan. The replacement of the fire and safety program will happen approximately 12 months later and will follow the same replacement strategy as the current security services …show more content…
Security and safety services are a perfect example of a non-mission critical support function. Because of this shift, the contract security service in all its forms, continues to grow annually in all areas, including physical security and cybersecurity. Industry studies conducted by the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) point to continued outsourcing of security services by both large and small companies (The United States security industry, 2013). This corporate shift allows companies to focus on their core mission and thus improve bottom line performance.
