Question 5: KFC Add Hope

Customers can donate R2 which goes into the KFC Add Hope Trust in order to help feed children living in poverty. This initiative feeds over 100 000 children each day. The initiative even has its own TV adverts to raise awareness. Add Hope has been able to increase the amount of beneficiaries each year and donate even more to the ones in need, because of the increase in funds raised from KFC Restaurant and customer donations. It operates separately as a Public Benefit Organisation and is registered and managed by a Board of Trustees, including KFC’s Managing Director and two franchisees. This Trust meets three times per year and is responsible for overseeing and distributing all the raised money. KPMG is its independent auditor. The Trust ensures that each R2 is used on the food for the children of the beneficiaries.

Add Hope has just recently raised slightly more than R387 million thanks to the donations made by KFC Restaurants and customers over the course of 7 years. Add Hope raised R39 million in 2016 alone.

It was in 2007 in which KFC’s parent company YUM! International decided that their CSI initiative would focus on hunger relief. They wanted to fight against the world’s worst health risk, i.e. hunger. I have chosen Add Hope for this question for this very reason as well. Hunger is a serious problem throughout the world and children need sufficient food and nutrition so that they can focus on learning and creating good foundations for their lives.

Question 6: SWOT analysis
The Add Hope project is a highly successful and effective CSR project. The chosen socio-economic issue is also a very good choice, because hunger is the biggest threat to people around the world.

SWOT Table:
Strengths:
• Helps with YUM! Brands’ vision of helping people and the environment

This refers to managing the three P’s, i.e. profits, people and the planet. Sustainable businesses are successful businesses.
