In last summer, with mixed feelings of anxiety and anticipation, I walked into the classroom in which the very first lecture of CS61A was going to be held at UC Berkeley. However, after the lecture, as an international student, as a community college student, as an adult learner, feelings of alienation and unrest occupied my mind rather than excitement. My journey of CS61A course started with anxieties, and it seemed that there was an insurmountable barrier regarding interacting with classmates. In retrospect, my sentiment solely overreacted against the environments surrounding me due to a dilution of feeling of belonging.…

Urban schools are most always portrayed in a negative light. Such is the case in the movie called Stand and Deliver which takes place in a high school in East Los Angeles during the 1980’s. This movie is based off a true story about a teacher by the name of Jaime Escalante, played by Edward Olmos, who worked diligently with a group of roughneck students because he thought that every student has the potential to learn. He believed that if the students and teacher had enough “Ganas” or motivation that students would supersede the expectations of any educational setting. Armed with his motivation he set out to teach 18 students far more math than they ever imagined they would learn; he taught them Calculus for them to take the AP Calculus Exam.…

Reflection on Book Title “The Leader, The Teacher & You” I share the same sentiment with the author that “Walk the ground!” is essential for a leader to earn respect from the ground. Walking the ground also requires social competency skills such as being able to “communicate to influence” and having “interpersonal effectiveness”. In future, I will apply this principle of “Walk the ground!” by constantly engaging my superiors, peers and subordinates for their guidance and opinions through cohesion and feedback sessions on how various tasks can be done more effectively and efficiently. Through these sessions, I will seek to understand their concerns and challenges in their area of work.…
