I think this experience will be beneficial to me in the future because I will have a better knowledge of the different cultures out there and how I can properly educate my students, keeping different cultures in mind. By branching out past the education system I went through and studied, I feel that will just allow me to connect with any of my students who may differ in any cultural aspect from myself. Rather, they should assist them in meeting the standards already set. I also thought using relevant examples to all cultures was a big take away because that makes so much sense, yet we don’t really even think about that easy of a solution. I was kind of surprised when she said she didn’t feel that she had been discriminated against or had any stereotypes placed on her. This surprised me because a lot of stereotyping is not conscious, we do it without even realizing what were doing and I think people just do it no matter what. I was also really surprised when she said public school has about 150 students in the class. Some of my college courses don’t even have that many students in the class. I think the interview made me more self-conscious of my own cultural background because it made me realize that my educational experiences were not necessarily the same as everyone else. I never had to experience lower expectations because of my race or ethnicity, I didn’t face language barriers in school and I never felt that I was discriminated against based on my cultural background.
