Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, was a physiologist, medical doctor, psychologist and influential thinker of the early twentieth century. Freud worked initially in close collaboration with Joseph Breuer. Also in 1895 Breuer and Freud published a book together Studies on Hysteria, which became the first psychoanalytic theory. Freud elaborated the theory that the mind is a complex energy-system (Crain, 2011). Freud believed that the adult personality was heavily influenced by events that occurred in early childhood especially in the first 5 or 6 years.
Furthermore, Erik Erikson is called the Neo-Freudian because his theory derives from Freud’s theory, Erikson focuses on personality development instead of focusing on the unconscious process and psychosexual development. Erikson’s view emphasizes conscious ego forces. Erickson theory focuses on social interactions in shaping the personality.
