Chapter 1│Introduction: Fierce Competition in the Pet Industry
High competition exists in the pet industry; therefore, pet companies should continuously innovate and diversify their range of products. As a pet food manufacturer, Blue Buffalo has dedicated numerous years producing premium, high quality cat and dog food and treats. We have also expanded our product selection with items not made for pet consumption such as cat litter. Although Blue Buffalo has gained tremendous success selling natural pet food, treats, and cat litter, the company can further develop by expanding its product line.
Since Blue Buffalo already sells cat litter, a supply outside of the pet food category, why not make our pet supplies category broader? Possible products

Before answering this question, many might suggest pet collars instead of pet toys. Pet collars are a good idea, but plush toys offer more benefits. For example, cat toys containing catnip lead to health benefits in cats. It provides cats with relaxation and happiness. Catnip also “stimulates cats to exercise and play and it can help ease [their] stress of traveling or help settle nerves for a visit to the veterinarian” (avma.org).
Just like cats benefit from catnip, dogs benefit from squeakers. Squeakers release a high-pitched sound such as the sound of a toy horn. Its purpose is to “promote play” and keep dogs “engaged and entertained” (PetsMart.com). Noise toys teach dogs “not to be afraid of unusual sounds, which is great for socialization” and “cause and effect – squeeze the toy and it will make a sound” (akc.org). Producing products with catnip and squeakers are a great representation of what we are set to do – keep pets happy and healthy. For example, a stuffing machine’s “filling efficiency is 15-20 times quicker than handmade” (Haijin Machinery Co, Ltd). They also allow plush toys to be more “fluey, soft, flexible, and comfortable” (Haijin Machinery Co, Ltd.). In addition, stuffing machines are easy to operate. For instance, polyester fiber is inserted into the tube located at the back of the machine which then transports it to the small tube found in front of the machine. The foot-valve, which starts, controls, and stops the speed of the filling, is found on the bottom of the machine (Refer to Figure 2).
