Officer Hasan is about 30 years of age, and he is a police officer. He is a white man, who is seeking therapy because he accidently killed a black man. One night while riding in a car with Peter, he mistook a statue for a gun. Officer Hasan and Peter got into a small argument and officer Hasan thought Peter was going to shoot him as he reached into his pocket. Afraid for his life, officer Hasan quickly pulled his gun and shot Peter dead. He later realized that Peter was unarmed. Officer Hasan left Peter’s body in a field and then went to burn the car. I will however ensure that he is comfortable by asking if he prefer a quiet room or soft background music. I would also ask him how was his day by trying to set the tone then gradually ease my way into asking him what brought him to therapy. I will ensue that my self-awareness hat is on, especially since Hasan and I are of different races. Lastly, I will try to build a rapport with Hasan. The key areas that I believe I should be mindful of are; his authority and the power that he holds over people of color and minorities, his race, and his values and beliefs, especially since he killed a black man who he thought was a thug. Some challenges that I might have are; it is possible that Hasan might not want to trust me. He might think that I am against him for killing a man who I share racial background with. He might also challenge my skills to see if I have his best interest at heart, and he might also ask to see a therapist that is of his racial background.
