For the first few days, he eats very little. Some days instead of a meal, he snacks over a period of a couple hours and consumes under 1,000 calories, not adequate for a 22o pound male who runs up to 5 miles several times per week. After a few days of this calorie restriction, David is starving and binges on pizza, bread and other “junk” foods. This may also be contributing to the sleep disturbances David experiences. Although he is likely starving from lack of food, this binge eating may stem in part from depression and lack of self-efficacy.
