Struggling with weight for much of his life, David is now in a place where he would like to focus on improving his health through nutrition. David’s top health concerns are weight loss, depression and insomnia. He has made a correlation between diet and feeling “better” in regards to his mental health concerns. David has not tried many “diets” over the years as his go to method for weight control has been exercise. His depression stems from lack of support and negative reactions from his family for his lifestyle choices. David was diagnosed with clinical depression about 7 years ago. At that time, he took Prosac for about 8 months. Not happy with the side affects, David turned to running to control his depression and seems to be managing it well. At this time, David is not taking any medications. He is currently taking a men’s multi …show more content…
He works 45-50 hours per week and loves his job. At times his work is stressful, however, he is learning to delegate tasks which seems to help lower his stress levels. He stated much of his stress is self inflicted by taking on too much. For the first few days, he eats very little. Some days instead of a meal, he snacks over a period of a couple hours and consumes under 1,000 calories, not adequate for a 22o pound male who runs up to 5 miles several times per week. After a few days of this calorie restriction, David is starving and binges on pizza, bread and other “junk” foods. This may also be contributing to the sleep disturbances David experiences. Although he is likely starving from lack of food, this binge eating may stem in part from depression and lack of self-efficacy.
