From watching the video on the Foxconn abuse of workers it was easy to see the abuse that was being carried out on the Foxconn employees. The company has over 500,000 employees and supply 50% of the world’s electronic components. (Chamberlain, 2011)
The factory is basically like a prison with the cramped living conditions and the military like security on the factory site for starters. Sometimes there could be 24 employees to the one dorm room. The research which was carried out by two NGOs, detail the strict rules that are applied in these dormitories. They aren’t allowed to have certain objects in there dormitories or use certain items. They report of one worker who used a hairdryer and was forced to writing a confession letter stating that they used a hairdryer and that they would never do it again. This is the type of cruel rules that workers who live in the dormitories have to abide by and have to live with. (Chamberlain, 2011) …show more content…
There basic pay for a month is £125 or 1350 yuan. This is for a basic 48 hour week. When you break that down it is about the equivalent of 65p an hour. (Chamberlain, 2011). However usually workers don’t get away with just working the 48 hours a week. Following an investigation carried out by the Fair Labour Association into the manufacturing processes of Foxconn, they found Foxconn were breaking many of the Chinese Labour laws. (Blodget, 2012) The biggest problem they found was the amount employees were over worked. During peak production times, such as when the iPad was released, the average working hours for a week were above 60 hours. (Blodget, 2012). In peak months also workers worked up to 70 hours and didn’t get their full 24 hour break and often worked 7 days straight. (Blodget,
