In the case study of “It wasn’t about race. Or was it?” by Jeffrey C. Connor, the case study was focused on three people. The first character that introduced in the case study is the managing partner of an accounting firm, (“Fuller Fenton”) Jack Parsons. The other two characters are Hope Barrows and Dillion Johnson workers for Fuller Fenton who are described as “hard working, valuable members of the accounting firm.” The conflict of the case study occurred in the parking lot of Fuller Fenton. On a Sunday afternoon, Hope Barrows drove into the garage to get a head start on her work for the week. When the garage was about to close, Dillion Johnson sneaked his way into the garage. Affirmative action is a policy that protects employees who suffer from discrimination and trains them and try to make sure they stay within the company. One key construct from affirmative action that I can relate to this case study is simple elimination of discrimination. Simple elimination of discrimination are programs that aren’t controversial and are favorable amongst employees. This could’ve been reported and been finished if only Dillion Johnson talked to Jack Parsons when the first taste of discrimination took place. Even when Dillion showed a picture of his wife to a coworker he should’ve at least felt uncomfortable by the look she gave him and approached the manager about it. Dillion waited until more attempts passed by and had to call up some friends to make sure he was doing the right decision in approaching Jack about the parking lot incident. It’s not right you should be open in a workplace no matter what the open door policy still exists. The last key in relation to affirmative action is tie-breaker. If all characteristics are equal, then the preference favors the minority candidate. Both are described as hard workers and valuable to Fuller Fenton but it could favor to Dillion in this situation. Hope did have a couple friends that were involved in mugging situation and had a concerning husband looking out for her but since those situations don’t favor to her directly then Dillion is the preference in this situation.
