Sample size is calculated by the following normogram developed by Altman, with 40% reduction in the gingivitis, 90% power of study and 95% confidence interval. (107) (108) Figure 7 Nomogram for calculating sample size or power by Altman. Available from Whitley E, Ball J. Statistics review 4: sample size calculations. Critical care. 2002;6(4):335.
The axis at the left hand in the figure shows the effect size or the standard difference, which we expect as 40% (0.4) and axis on right hand shows the power of study, which we consider for this study as 90% (0.90). The total sample size for this study is calculated by drawing a straight line from the right to left axis. Since the P value (Significance level) considered as 0.05, the upper part of intersection is taken as the total sample size for both the arms (Intervention and control) which is

Studies have highlighted that poor state of oral health in hospitalised patients is due to low priority given to oral care provision, poor knowledge of oral procedures by healthcare professional, lack of protocols assessment tool, lack of implementation of oral care regimes and lack of staff training. There are guidelines for the provision of high quality care for oral hygiene in hospital settings, but as the research points out, there is inadequate details for family carers. The help of carer’s and family during patient hospitalisation can make a great difference to this aspect of their care and well-being and more should be done to encourage their involvement (British Dental Foundation, 2014). The aim of this innovation is to; raise awareness for the need for effective oral health promotion, plan for change to make sure oral health promotion is provided, education and training is provided and assessment tools are provided; implement/execute the plan then evaluate the plan and ensure that the change becomes permanent. As part of this class the instructor had create a variety of interactive assignments where students get to experience what it feels when having a real patient in front of them. Such was the clinic observation activity where we, the lower clinic class, had the opportunity to observe how students of a higher class were handling a full clinic section with the help of their high qualified instructors. One of the expectations I had for this activity was that I would be able to see the process of care in action, since the clinician brings the patient to the operatory…

Thousands of people are terrified of going to the dentist, but there are many other methods are available to help those who fear it. Going to the dentist is better than not going at all. There are too many diseases that have been linked or related to bad oral care and if there is a way people can be aware, then we can stop the spread of these diseases and even save lives. This is why young kids should start to understand good oral health at an early age, resulting in avoiding horrible and possibly life-threatening diseases. “More and more research just keeps pouring in that confirms all the connections between health of the mouth and the resulting health of the body.”…

This allowed me to analyze the improvement of the kids’ knowledge from before and after having an oral health education presenter. After analyzing the difference, it was clear that the students took away more knowledge than they had coming in. The class improved on all six of the questions asked. This was very rewarding to know that they were listening and truly learned more about their oral health. Another method I used to evaluate if the students gained anything from the presentation was asking them,” if they were excited to go home and tell or show their parents the flossing and brushing techniques they learned today”, which they all shouted “Yes”!…
