Case Analysis: Chevrolet Silverado

I was conducting diagnostic and repairs on a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado ZR1 6.0 Y pickup truck. One of my family members was complaining of a cylinder misfire on cylinders 1 and 6. My family member had already replaced plugs, wires, fuel injectors and coils associated with the cylinder and the cylinder misfire persisted. Once I was informed of this information I was instantly concerned of some form of internal engine failure. I will cover the series of events that happened during this repair to this 2007 Chevrolet Silverado.
I took on the repair even though I was inadequately prepared for the task. I lacked the proper diagnostic tools and knowledge to properly diagnose the problem that was troubling the vehicle. I needed compression gauges, cylinder leaked down tester, digital multimeter (DMM), valve train compression tools, micrometers, and feeler gauges just to name a few tools. Once I began conducting diagnosis of the vehicle I realized I would need some of these tools early on. First I began to rule out common issues to the cylinder misfires on cylinder 1 and 6. I began with a visual inspection of spark plugs and testing injectors and coils with a DMM and NOID light tester. Once I confirmed the issue was not being caused by fuel or ignition then came the trouble

Chevrolet had released a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) about this very issue. TSB PIP 4568S covered failure of the Active Fuel Management System (AFM) and cylinder misfires on 1,4,6,and 7. The AFM system relies on hydraulic pressure to cancel cylinders to conserve fuel which is controlled through Valve Lifter Oil Manifold (VLOM). The powertrain control module (PCM) controls the VLOM through groundside pulse width modulation and when driving condition are correct it uses solenoids within the VLOM to hydraulically cancel cylinders 1,4,6, and 7. These hydraulic lifters are prone to failure and damage internal engine

The reason why Harrison Ford’s plane crashed has been determined, according to Radar Online, August 5, 2015. The National Transportation Safety Board found the carburetor’s main metering jet was loose. This allowed too much fuel to flow, which led to the loss of power. This vital piece is necessary for the plane to run as it mixes the proper amounts of gas and air of the engines operating speeds. They believe the part loosened over the years stemming from the time when the plane was rebuilt and restored 17 year ago.…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Germantown, MD) When the check engine light comes on in a vehicle, the owner typically panics, assuming a large repair bill is in his or her future. Surprisingly, BrandonGaille.com reports this warning often comes as a result of a gas cap that is loose, missing or damaged, and inspections for a loose gas cap were the second most common vehicle fix in 2010. When any warning light comes on in a vehicle, the driver needs to have it investigated immediately, and Milestone Liberty can be of assistance in determining where the problem lies and what repairs are needed, if any. "A loose gas cap may not appear to be a major problem at first, yet 147 million gallons of gas evaporate each year at the result of this issue.…

In this week’s article reflection, I learned more about the AR-10. Springfield Armory selected two rifles in 1956 to be tested for military use. According to Bartocci (2014), almost immediately failures erupted. After failing to impress Springfield Armory, the test rifle was sent back to Armalite for correction.…

“The mouse that roared” was the label placed on the legendary M16 as it claimed responsibility for utterly destroying hundreds of thousands of North Vietnamese militants and fighters (Parsons). The M16 was and currently is an assault rifle that was developed by an American engineer named Eugene Stoner (Morgan). The development of the M16 was significant due to the revolutionary design and accuracy that saved many Americans their lives. Even though the M16 is still the weapon of choice today and is credited with saving thousands of lives, there is stark controversy over the reliability and firepower of the weapon. Opponents of the M16 claim thousands of men were lying dead with their jammed M16s next to them in Vietnam (Morgan).…

The most important factor that caused the derailment of the train is, when Lac-Megantic was testing its mandatory hand brakes test, the hand brakes and air brakes were left together, so during the test, the freight train were held by the hand brakes and air brakes, which gave the impression that the train was held only by the hand brakes, so the engineer and the rail traffic controller thought that the train was secure. Before the accident, the locomotive was reviewed by MMA’s repair shop eight months ago the accident, and MMA used a weak and not durable epoxy material that made the oil to concentrate in the turbocharger which produce fire the night of the accident. In the mid-1900’s America’s domestic car companies felt little to no threat by its non-domestic competitors. This began to change in the 1960’s when an influx of affordable, yet quality cars made by foreign companies, gained popularity on American soil. In hopes of regaining dominance as the top automobile provider, Ford Motor Company vouched to create a car that was affordable to all Americans, a model later named the Ford Pinto. Although affordable, costing a small $2,000, the Pinto held many manufacturing flaws, and in the end proved to be a dangerous and even deadly car for the American consumer.…

Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the American Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The craft was launched on April 11, 1970, at 13:13 CST from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days later, crippling the Service Module(SM) upon which the Command Module (CM) depended. Despite great hardship caused by limited power, loss of cabin heat, shortage of potable water, and the critical need to jury-rig the carbon dioxide removal system, the crew returned safely to Earth on April 17. The flight passed over the far side of the Moon at an altitude of 254 kilometers (137 nautical miles) from the lunar surface, 400,171 km (248,655 mi) from Earth, a…
