Cartoon (A) Cartoon (B)

HANDS OFF!! 99.3%!!! No, it is not a grade of a student, it is the percentage of sexual harassment in Egypt! Sexual harassment has been a serious problem for a long time and its percentage has been rising. Therefore, media is supposed to raise people’s awareness and put them in the right path. One type of media which is cartoons or caricatures is supposed to make fun of a serious problem by using sarcastic pictures or language and through them it delivers the message. Cartoon (A) shows an employee who is doing an interview for a new job. She is talking to the boss and he is asking her to continue this interview at his place

There are two types of irony, situational irony which is the difference between the way things are and how they should be. The other type is verbal irony which is the use of words to mean something different from what a person actually says. Verbal irony is seen in the boss’s talk in cartoon (A), “I abide the law, I conduct interviews at my place”. In these words, the boss is telling the employee that he is following the rules, and at the same time he asks her to go to his place to continue the interview, while he should do the interview in the office as he will be following the rules. It is obvious that he is saying something and in the same time doing the opposite. On the other hand, the situational irony in cartoon (B) lies in both of the men’s faces. They are not normal as one of them has a pig face and the other has got an antenna above his head. They are not supposed to look like that. Moreover, the man with the pig face is harassing the young lady who is wearing hijab and the antenna man is acting like he does not care. She is not even wearing any grabbing-attention clothing. The man who has a pig face is not supposed to sexually harass the woman, and if he does, the antenna man should stop him from doing this. All in all, from my point of view, i can see that the irony in cartoon (B) is much …show more content…
The artist used analogy in the harasser’s face. He compared the man’s face with a pig that means that he does not have a mind to think of what he is doing. He is allowing his primitive desires take over as if he is an animal. Cartoon (B) is more weighty as it has analogy while the other does not. Symbolism is used in cartoon (B) to make it more touchy. Symbolism by definition is the use of simple objects to stand for larger concepts or ideas .It can be seen in the antenna above the man’s head. The artist used this antenna to show that this man is not caring for what is happening for the young lady behind him so he used this antenna to compare him with a T.V or Radio or any other object that is useless, not caring to address this massive problem. Since symbolism is only used in one cartoon it makes it more effective. Summing it all up, from my point of view, I see that cartoon (B) is much stronger than carton (A) as the artist has used a lot of effective techniques like symbolism, analogy and irony and it also delivers the message more clearly. As obvious through the different techniques that have been used, the problem is massive. Campaigns should be held as well as treating the harassers and those being harassed

First is dramatic irony, which is where the reader or audience knows something about the character that the character themselves doesn’t know. For this he used an example of Oedipus a character in Greek mythology. The story involves a young boy who is kicked out of his home when his father learns that he is to be killed by Oedipus. After growing up, Oedipus does end up killing his own father, due to the precautions that his father took in order to avoid that exact scenario: Irony. He also discusses situational irony, where the situation turns out different than expected.…

Irony is used in the stories “Sorry, Right Number” by Stephen King and “Back There” by Rod Serling. Verbal irony uses sarcasm to hide how the character actually feels, while situational irony is what is the opposite of what is expected from that situation. Irony is needed in both of these stories because it builds suspense, makes the desire of the reader to keep reading, and making the overall story more enjoyable. In King’s “Sorry, Right Number”, he uses verbal irony through the stage directions in Act 1 where Connie asks Dennis “Do you think Aunt Dawn’s…

People who disseminate information through media are in possession of one of the most influential tools in society. Popular cartoonists fall under this category, as they can project their biased and personal perspectives on reality. “What political cartoonists portray may be an imaginary situation in allegory or a figure greatly distorted by caricature, but to the artists this is the essence of what is actually happening” (Charles Press, The Political Cartoon) Many cartoonists truly believe that their “distortion” of reality captures the reality everyone else is experiencing. Therefore, images circulated in society have the potential to convey opinions and stereotypes.…

Irony is a disagreement between what is actually being said and what is misunderstood, or what is expected it happen compared to what actually occurs. Authors will usually use this in their stories intentionally to make their audience stop and think about what was just said. The readers must realize when irony is taking place or what is being said in order for the use of irony to be successful. Dramatic irony is most found within books in which they put their characters in certain situations. In “Good Country People (O’Connor 116) we find two different types of irony, there is situational irony and dramatic irony.…

For instance, the political cartoon illustrates three different classes in airport check ins; first class, economy class, and muslim class. Both the first class and the economy class appear to be experiencing no difficulties such as “random” security checks. However, the artist illustrates a line up of security dogs, “bomb squad”, military, and other security organizations along the muslim class check in line. The contrast between the first two classes and muslim class depicts the racial discrimination that muslims experience at airport security.…

Verbal irony is when the opposite of what is meant, is said. Dramatic irony is when the audience or some characters know something that others don’t.
