Carol Twombly was born on June 13, 1959 in Concord, Massachusetts. She was a promising student at the Rhode Island School of Design. Before becoming a typographer, she was a sculpture, but later on she decided to go into graphic design because it was more practical course to study for her. She studied under the type designer Charles Bigelow, the designer of Lucida, Apple Geneva and Wingdings. Bigelow’s work interested and influenced her work as a typographer. In 1988, Twombly joined Adobe where she contributed to the design of many typefaces such as Trajan, Myraid, and Adobe Caslon. As a typographer Twombly had a short but brilliant career.

This typeface is classified as an incised display typeface. Designed in 1989, Lithos consists only of capital letters and only comes in five weights. Unlike Ancient Greek lettering, Lithos has an inclusion of bold weights.

Charlemagne is a serif typeface designed in 1989. Twombly got inspiration to design this typeface from the classical Roman engravings. On this typeface, they are differentiated by the thin and pointed serifs which sometimes extends past the border of the forms. With these serifs, they still retain clean lines and proportions. This typeface is mainly used to be large and stand out due to its classical beauty and is typically a titling typeface.
