ROBERT CULVERT - NOVEMBER 1957 A young man, bowlegged with red hair, stumbles into the gas station. He grabs a toy off the shelf and tosses it on the counter. Robert Colvert, the attendant at the Crest Service Station, picks it up, looks at it, scans it. The young man opens his billfold and blushes as he realizes it’s empty. He mumbles something about buying it on credit… a girlfriend… Christmas gift… Colvert holds up his hands and explains the policy - nothing is sold on credit. The man is flustered, begging. Realizing he’s getting nowhere, the readheaded kid stoms out. A few days later: December 1, 1957. The young man reenters the store. He looks around: the store is empty. He pulls a shotgun out of nowhere and grabs Colvert, forcing him to hand over a wad of cash, amounting to $100, then leads Colvert outside into his car. Thoughts race through Colvert’s mind. His wife is pregnant and she’s home, probably having coffee with her mother. She doesn’t know what’s happening to him - heck, he doesn’t even know what’s happening to
