Phenomenological and Family Systems Theory guided the study. Phenomenology is considered not only a philosophy but also a research method. Family Systems Theory approaches the study with a focus on the dynamic and interactions within the family and between the family with the context.
Methodology
The author applied phenomenology approach to design the study. In-depth interviews were conducted in two rounds with 26 informants. Those informants were Indian, Hindus, from the middle class, those with experience of observing or taking care of their elderly parents for at least two years. Among them, there were eight females and 18 males with the mean age of 37, ranged from 30 to 44. They were recruited with purposive first and then snowball sampling techniques.
In the first round, during four months, the researchers conducted 26 face-to-face interviews. Each interview lasted from 90 to 120 minutes. The findings indicate that among Indian caregivers, caregiving is an important role in each family because each caregivers consider it a filial responsibility and a God demand. Caregiving, however, leads to physical and mental fatigues, financial burden.
