Career Paper On Dental Surgery

I remember the day that I got my braces off. It was the first time that I remember crying for something other than feeling pain. It was at this moment in my orthodontist’s office that I began to realize the impact that this one person has made on my life. From that time on I then knew that I wanted a career in dentistry. Lucky for me, there are many different fields in dentistry that appeal to me, and what I want to do with my future. The two careers that I have chosen are Dentist and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or commonly know as an Oral surgeon. This job is also on the clinical side of healthcare. There are multiple ways that one could take to become an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. You can take the route of dental school. This route you will get your DDS, which stands for Doctor of Dental Surgery. This usually takes four years to acquire. After finishing dental school, you can take one of two routes. You can either decided to enter a program that will give you your medical degree and the certification to be an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, or you can choose to not do the extra two years of school and go straight into the residency program to become an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Oral surgeons perform surgical procedures on the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions. Oral and maxillofacial surgeon treat diseases, injuries, or defects in the same regions. They diagnose problems of the oral and maxillofacial regions and perform surgery to improve function or appearance. As for day-to-day activities, no day is usually the same for an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. They see many different cases daily and can hold multiple positions like teaching new residents or dental students. However, commonly the do reconstructive jaw procedures and deal with other complex medical cases.
