The ABCDE framework (Resuscitation Council 2005) is an acronym that is used for assessment and treatment for critically ill patients. It is a framework that is widely recognised and when used correctly can form the basis for a rapid, yet systematic and therefore thorough initial assessment (Jevon 2010; Page and McKinney 2012). It also assists in determining the seriousness of the condition and helps to prioritise the interventions needed (Page and McKinney 2012; Thim et al. 2012). It is suggested for use whenever life-threatening illness is suspected (Thim et al. 2012) and Mrs Reid’s high respiratory rate is suggestive that she may suddenly deteriorate (Resuscitation Council 2005). The use of the ABCDE framework in the assessment of Mrs Reid…

The immediate concern for T.J are the ABC’s (airway, breathing, circulation) and preserving vital organ functioning (Silvestri, 2017). The priority nursing actions are to assess for airway patency, administer oxygen as prescribed to perfuse tissues and organs, obtain vital signs (as well as carboxyhemoglobin levels) to assess a baseline and compare subsequent vital signs once fluid resuscitation is initiated, initiate an IV line and begin fluid replacement as prescribed to prevent hypovolemic shock, elevate the extremities if no fractures are obvious to assist in preventing shock, keep her warm and place T.J her on and NPO status because of altered gastrointestinal function that results from a burn injury (Silvestri, 2017). A foley catheter may be inserted so that the response to the fluid resuscitation can be monitored (Silvestri, 2017). The nurse should stay with the patient and monitor TJ’s status closely. Administering pain medications IV route to treat pain (5th vital sign) is also a priority (Silvestri, 2017)..…

On the left side of the human chest is an organ about the size of a fist, commonly referred to as the heart. Responsible for pumping blood throughout the entire body, the heart is essentially the life force of mankind. For reasons such as natural causes, generational inheritance, or over exertion, people can have an abnormal heart rhythm. Dr. Michel Mirowski studied arrhythmias and the first Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) was used in 1980. “ICDs are for people who have had an abnormal, fast heart rate that caused them to faint or caused their heart to stop pumping properly” (“Implantable”, 2015).…

Before becoming a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), I was completely unaware of the Good Samaritan Laws. The widespread lack of awareness of Good Samaritan Laws prevents many from assisting in a sudden cardiac arrest situation.…

The Second fact that I found interesting was how mouth to mouth resuscitation is the best treatment for a heroin overdose. Heroin was first synthesized in 1898 at the German labs of the Bayer Company. Heroin is a synthetic narcotic drug that was prescribed as a pain killer and helped with treatment for a range of other ailments such as bronchitis and emphysema when it first hit the market. In the earlier years, heroin was also a cure for morphine addiction and cured a range of other additions, for instance, opium addiction, and alcoholism. Although it helped cure other addictions, this drug was way more potent than the other drug that they were originally addicted to in the first place.…

Years ago, an administrator told me to open the crash cart even though cardiopulmonary resuscitation was not preformed, because a charge could be sent to the insurance company if the lock on the crash cart was broken; needless to say, I left the company shortly after that event. Early in my career, I learned that patient care and billing for such care was a priority to administrators. I commonly refer to such people as “carpet people”. I think that they must have has some interaction with taking care of patients at some point in their career, but have walked the carpet so long that they forget what is involved. Some of my coworkers, mostly carpet people, are not so pleased with my terminology, but sometimes I am not so pleased with their train…

It was a cold Saturday morning back in January, 2012. I remember tucking my scrubs into my socks in a failed effort to prevent them from getting soaked in the slush-coated parking lot. I was overwhelmed with excitement as I rushed through the hallway to make it to huddle. Not even a snowstorm the size of Texas, trapping us all at work for days, could dampen my mood that morning. It was only my second week on the job in the emergency room when not even a half hour into my shift I witnessed my first cardiac arrest.…
