The environment changes overtime, causing plants to respond to these changes. The concentration of CO₂ in the atmosphere is increasing at unknown rates as a result having a significant impact on plant function and the climate. It is important to discover how plant behaviour will be impacted as the concentration of CO₂ starts fluctuating. Since the concentration of CO₂ and rate of photosynthesis are both directly related to each other as one influences the other. (Peter J. Franks 2012) The major factor causing an increase in atmospheric CO₂ concentration are fossil-fuels combustion and deforestation. The increase in atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide has many positive and negative consequences on plant species. Some positive effects are improved efficiency in water use and the other is a greater rates of photosynthesis. (MT Grombone-Guaratini 2013)
The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the impact of photosynthesis production as the concentration of CO₂ amplified. This experiment was designed to question how the quantity of carbon present affects the rate of photosynthesis in an aquatic plants.

Plants produce photosynthesis based on two reactions that are carried out by different sections of the chloroplast. (Matthew P. Johnson 2016) Photosynthesis is created when CO₂ reacts with water to form oxygen, and a carbohydrate.(Lab Manual) By manipulating the CO₂ concentrations, it was able to see how it directly affected the production of one of the products of photosynthesis, oxygen. It was hypothesized that increasing the concentration of sodium bicarbonate which was represented by CO₂ in the experiment will increase the rate of photosynthesis which will be determined by measuring the rate of oxygen
