Carbon Dating Does NOT Cause Radioactive Decay

Half-life
Carbon dating is used to find the age of fossils, the earth, and rocks. 14C is an unstable isotope that causes radioactive decay. Because 14C causes radioactive decay, it is used in finding the age of organic matter, or the process of Carbon dating. Radioactive decay occurs when one element changes into another element as it decays. As 14C decays, it turns into 14N, an isotope of Nitrogen.
Using the original amount of carbon in the organic material, and the half-life of carbon, 5,730 years, Carbon dating calculates how long an organism has been dead, or how long ago a rock was formed. However, this very useful method has it limits. According to Christian scientist Mike Riddle, Carbon dating can estimate a substance’s age up to 80,000 years using the “”Accelerator Mass Spectrometer”.”

Believing that the earth is very young, 6,000 years old to be exact, Riddle believes that Carbon dating makes the ages of organic material much greater than that of their actual age. Riddle believes that “Dr. Willard Libby, the founder of the carbon-14 dating method, assumed” that the ratio of 12C and 14C were “constant” (Riddle, Mike.) When creating the process of carbon dating, Libby disregarded the fact that the “atmosphere” was not “in equilibrium,” as it conflicted with his belief of a billion year old earth (Riddle, Mike.) Libby thought that since earth was created so long ago, that the “atmosphere” should have been “in equilibrium” (Riddle, Mike.) However, Riddle states that “Dr. Libby’s calculations showed that if the earth started with no 14C in the atmosphere, it would take up to 30,000 years to build up to a steady state (equilibrium).” This idea that the earth’s atmosphere was not balanced supports Riddle’s claim that earth is relatively young, which supports the idea that according to the Bible, the earth was created 6,000 years

Radiocarbon dating was invented similarly with the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Furthermore, due to the long duration of time elapse, it was hard to date the time when the scrolls were produced. Although the hot and dry climate of the Dead Sea prevented it from rotting severely, it was still difficult to exclude the containments included in the fragments and scrolls. As a result, the process of processing the samples was intricate. At the first part of the process, the scientists tried to prove the authenticity of the samples.…

The Elena Gallegos Open Space area sits near the base of the Sandia Mountains on a piedmont surface. This exercise was intended to gain insight into the mountain-front landforms of the Pino Embayment area. Through the use of surficial geological mapping and soil descriptions we were able to establish relative ages of geomorphic surfaces of the area and determine whether the area displayed qualities of alluvial fan and pediment surfaces. The geomorphic setting of the study area showed resemblances to two typical types of surfaces seen in mountain-front geomorphology, alluvial fans and pediment surfaces.…

By studying the growth rings in the wood found in the site, it can be possible to date the objects. This is done by comparing the samples taken from Angkor to other samples in the archaeological record. As trees grow at various rates depending on the climate and environmental conditions, some growth rings will be thicker or thinner each year. Dendrochronology is a very precise dating tool as the samples are compared against many others to find a sample with the same growth patterns, and a date can be derived from that…

Although potassium-argon is one of the simplest dating methods, there are still some cases where it does not agree with other methods (Wiens, 2002). When this does happen, it is usually because the gas within bubbles in the rock is from deep underground rather than from the air (Wiens, 2002). This gas can have a higher concentration of argon-40 escaping from the melting of older rocks (Wiens, 2002). This is called parentless argon-40 because its parent potassium is not in the rock being dated, and is also not from the air (Wiens, 2002). In these slightly unusual cases, the date given by the normal potassium-argon…

A fossil’s age can be determined by a method known as Relative Dating. If the age of the rock beneath the layer in which the fossil is found is known, then the fossil will be younger than that rock according to the Law of Superposition. Or if the rock layer above is known, then the fossil will be older than that layer. Radiometric…

There are several areas in the natural world where the process of exponential decay arises from random processes. Whenever a material decays at a rate in proportion to its amount, this material represents the process of exponential decay. Exponential decay can be described using the mathematical model y=a×e^(-bx). A prominent example of naturally occurring random exponential decay is the process of radioactive decay.…

What is radioactive dating? and how does it work? Radioactive, or Radiometric dating is a technique used to determine the age of objects such as rocks or carbon by using the decay rate of radioactive isotopes. It has been used since its invention by Ernest Rutherford in 1905. Radioactive decay itself, is the process by which an unstable atomic nucleus loses energy by emitting radiation.…

Geologists generally know the age of a rock by determining the age of the group of rocks or formation that it is found in. Also the age of formations that is marked on a geologic calendar is known as the geologic time scale. You can tell the age of rocks by relative and absolute timing. Relative dating determines something from the past. Absolute dating determines the age on a specific object.…

Recently Earth has been slowing down the number of volcanoes erupting recently, but also a slow-down in sedimentation and a noticeable lull in tectonic plate movement. The Paleoproterozoic era was a significant time in Earth’s history. It was at this time when the atmosphere got its first taste of oxygen and also the first global glaciation event. But this was also a time where other uniformistisic routines shut down. Earth's mantle used to be much hotter than it is today and volcanoes allowed the mantle to cool over time, and geologic processes are thought to slow down.…

The rocks scientist use to compare to other rocks are index fossils. Index fossils are species that that lived for a brief amount of time and are abundant. Scientists also use the Law of Superposition, which states the youngest layers are on the top while the oldest layers are on the bottom. Scientist use this law to determine the relative age by concluding that fossils that are found in the same layer are around the same age. When scientist look at the rock layers, use radiocarbon dating, and use relative dating they are able to learn about Earth’s past and what it might of looked like back…

    Carbon Dating

    • 545 Words

Once a living thing dies, the carbon dating process begins. As long as an organism is alive it will continue to take in 14C or radio carbon; however, when it dies, it will stop. Since 14C is radioactive (decays into 14N), the amount of 14C in a dead organism gets less and less over time. Therefore, part of the dating process involves measuring the amount of 14C that remains after some has decayed. Scientists now use a device called AMS (don't know what it stands for) to figure out the ratio of 14C to 12C, which increases the "assumed" accuracy to about 80,000 years.…
