Recently my classmates and I took a peregrination to the Conodoguinet Creek. On this peregrination, we performed many tests to determine the health of the Conodoguinet Creek. The test we performed ranged from alkalinity test to pH testing and through these tests we were able to determine the health of the creek. The Conodoguinet creek is a branch of the Susquehanna River in PA U.S.A. Approximately the creek is around 90 miles long and the watershed of the creek is about 200 square miles.…
By 1879, 24 smelting furnaces operated at the site. Groundwater Pollution Some of the waste materials at the mine have been exposed to weathering for 50 to 200 years (Hammarstrom et al., 2001). The underlying bedrock is predominantly noncarbonaceous, and therefore has little capacity to neutralize acid (Hammarstrom et al.,…
The Northtmet project from Polymet should not be continued because there is to much of a risk to a national park called the Boundary Waters. Polymet has never operated a mine before and we can already get the minerals they are mining by recycling. There is too much of a risk of something breaking and polluting the area. I haven't found an instance where a sulfide mine that hasn't polluted the area and it takes somewhere from 200 to 500 years to clean the water and area. Sulfide mines are the most polluting mines there are too.…
Abstract This paper details the causes and extent of the pollution at Tar Creek Superfund site in Ottawa County, Oklahoma. This Superfund site is a heavy metal-contaminated area that was created by the aftermath of zinc and lead mining operations throughout the 1900s. The pollution has put local inhabitants at risk of different health issues, and while risk assessments have shown that no significant health risks are obvious compared to the rest of the state of Oklahoma, blood lead levels have been recorded to be high in Ottawa county children. Many different organizations, both government and private, are involved in the remediation of Tar Creek Superfund site.…
Marching Band Officer Essay I am interested in becoming a Drill Tech Captain or Brass Captain for the 2018-2019 Marching Band season. Ever since I started marching with the Mahwah Marching Thunderbirds, I have found myself amazed and interested in the culmination of expression through music and movement. Never before have I participated in an activity with such structure, passion, pride, and strong relationships between members. As a freshman, I was inspired by professional leaders of the band and how they were not only dignified while on the field, but enthusiastic and welcoming as well. I would love to be a leader in Marching Band so that I may positively contribute to the transference of the marching band drill and music from paper…
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” Exodus 20:8. Johnny did not keep the Sabbath holy. Johnny should not have attempted to create the silver basin on Sunday for these reasons: it was against the law, he needed more time, and he did it for all the wrong reasons. Firstly, Johnny should not have tried creating the sugar basin since it was against the law.…
Aside from its negative effects upon Southern California’s water supply, the channelization of the river has also made it impossible for numerous species that once thrived in the river to survive at all today. Additionally the water that flows in the river today is mostly from artificial sources as 80% of the flow now comes from a wastewater treatment plant in the San Fernando Valley. (Rosner, 2014) Lastly it has become a center for pollution as trash and debris are commonly found discarded in its waters. This not only decreases the degree to which the river is able to support wildlife, but the degree to which it is able to serve the purposes that people need it for as…
Before going into this class, I always thought culture was just part of your background and you grew up with it. I saw it as something that had to do with your family history. Which, in a way it does, but that 's not what culture is all about. I always love learning more about other cultures and other people in general. Culture is not only a part of your family background, but impacts your point of view and how you see things.…
The Pacific Northwest was once full of an abundance of untapped resources, it was barely populated and was the definition of a hinterland. As the Pacific Northwest started to become known and resources started to become majorly exploited and shipped, we slowly become what we are now, not a hinterland. After all the overuse and misuse of the land we are not and will never hinterland again. The definition of a hinterland is defined as parts of the country that is less developed and unchartered. The Pacific Northwest use to be a hinterland, but as this area grew with the railroad system that brought people here.…

Tensions between the AEF’s Paris command office and the Stars and Stripes simmered for months before General Harts himself visited their office to clear the air. Speaking to an impromptu assembly of the paper 's personnel, Harts addressed the aforementioned distribution delay and a laundry list of other sources of hostility between the Stars and Stripes staff and his office. He admitted fault for several of those incidents, reminded the staff of how important their work was to the United States, and expressed regret that any of them might have perceived Harts to be personally prejudiced against the paper. Addressing both the enlisted men and their officer-in-charge alike, Harts took careful measures to be sure that no one in the office of this incredibly influential paper felt any…
