Caper's Law Character Analysis

Caper’s Law In 2015, 6,131 military service members reported a sexual assault. Of those 6,131 reports, only 317 service members were court-martialed and sentenced to confinement as a result of a reported sexual assault. That means only one in twenty reports led to a conviction, and the rest of the assailants walked free. Victims confront a system in which the investigators charged with pursuing their cases treat them with suspicion, rape kits are lost, guilty confessions are disregarded and jury verdicts can be vacated with the stroke of a commander’s pen. The powerful message behind Caper’s Law is a concept that will revolutionize the way society looks at the military rape culture and those that are convicted. Not only that, Caper’s Law will …show more content…
The main character is Caroline Capers, a Lance Cpl. in the United States Marine Corps. She is a middle-class, white, optimistic and motivated 22-year-old young woman from Skaneateles, New York, a small town not far from Syracuse. I would choose Emma Stone to depict Caroline Capers because she is aesthetically what I imagine for Caroline. Her multi-faceted and strong-willed demeanor is also what I propose for Caroline’s character.
For 1st Sgt. Marcus Medina, I would cast Mario Lopez to depict him. Lopez fits as a Hispanic, mid-thirties appearance, overall stature and qualities that I intend for this character to possess. The character of 1st Sgt. Medina needs to be able to play a likeable and kindhearted military man as well as an evil, manipulative rapist. 1st Sgt. Medina has a history of several deployments causing him to suffer from severe post-traumatic stress disorder. An actor who can be versatile is a must for his character. For Caroline’s counselor, Ms. Sharon Johnson, I’d like to cast Kerry Washington. Ms. Washington’s physical features as well her manner are exactly what I will need to play Caroline’s 38-year-old, African American, sweet, empathetic, and strong willed counselor. Finally, the last leading role is for the Judge Advocate General (JAG), Lt. Colonel Sarah Houston. I recommend that Catherine Bell play this character as she is a strong character and fits the demographic I’d like to see play this role. Sarah Houston is a white, poised and passionate 45-year-old attorney who has been in her profession for a long time and is a major advocate for defending victims of sexual

Henrietta Leavitt was played by Katie Piper, Margaret Leavitt was played by Sarah Lambert, Peter Shaw was played by Morgan Gates, Annie Cannon was played by Julia Whalen, and Williamina Fleming was played by Beth Ryan. All of the actors were convincing of the roles they played, and I didn’t dislike any of the actors. Having to choose one favorite actor or character from this play is very difficult, but my favorite actor would be Ms. Ryan, who played the character Williamina Fleming. She was my favorite actor because she portrayed her character the best and she was convincing of her part in the play. I liked that she had a very comical part in the play too.…

For the role of Eunice, I chose Coach Bieste from “Glee.” One of the main similarities I see between the two is that they both take the physical abuse from their significant others. In one scene, Steve and Eunice get into an argument and Stanley abuses her. After Steve realizes what he did, he begs for forgiveness from Eunice and she just forgives him just like that, despite the pain he had caused her. In Coach Bieste’s situation, she is in an abusive relationship and yet she decides not to let anyone know about it, She keeps it to herself and yet she still loves her husband.…

Their assailants by-and-large were other service members. Although roughly 80% of cases go unreported, those who do report often face retaliation from their units or commanding officers.…

Military sexual assault is a pervasive problem throughout the military, despite numerous initiatives to end it. While the military is starting to see an increase in sexual assault reporting, there’s still a fraction of men and women who choose not to report (Groves, 2013). Sexual assault is alarmingly common in the U.S. military, and no one dares to speak up about it. Statistics report that thirty-eight service members are sexually assaulted a day and not enough has been done to address this under-reported issue (Castro, Kintzle, Schuyler, Lucas, & Warner, 2015). That being said, this paper will analyze two articles on military sexual assault and integrate the articles highlighting points of similarity and differences on the subject.…
