A star is a glowing ball of plasma being held together by gravity. Likewise, a constellation is a grouping of stars in specific patterns and Cancer is one of the most ancient constellations in our sky. The twelve constellations in the zodiac, Cancer is commonly presented as a Crab for its Latin name. It is nearly impossible to see the constellation with the naked eye. Its location lies 6 degrees north to 33 degrees north and an area of about 506 square degrees. Tropic of Cancer get its name from this constellation because of its line of most northern latitude. Without the use of a telescope this constellation seems like a cloudy patch of light, but when the proper equipment is used it shows the grouping of hundreds of starts together. There is only one meteor shower associated with Cancer and that is Delta Cancroids. The most salient feature is the beehive cluster with the Messier 44 and it shows to be about 600 light years away. The stars of the beehive were all created at the same time, which can be deducted that their life year span is about 600-700 million years or 4 billion years younger than the sun. Cancer’s major stars include Acubens-Alpha, Al tarf-Beta, Asellus Australis-Delta, Asellus Borealis-Gamma, and Iota Cancri. Acubens is a white color star with about 174 light years away from planet Earth and its Arabic for “claws”. One of the most luminous stars in this cluster is the Al tarf and is an orange star of about 500 times bigger than the sun in diameter and it translates to “the end”. Asellus Australis has an orange-yellow color and about 181 light years away from Earth and its translation is “southern donkey”.
