Cancer And Abuse Case Study

Cancer and abuse. While both malignant, can bring out the best in a human. When a person is faced with a difficult situation they must find way to overcome it in order to triumph over it. Horace once said that,
One could say that it is not adversity that brings out the traits, but rather the fact that the person is motivated into getting out of the hardship or difficulty that they are in. In this case, it is possible to be motivated even if the person is not facing a difficult moment in their life. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and his right leg had to be amputated. Yet this did not put a stop in his athletic career. He went on to become a three time national championship winner in wheelchair basketball and continued running with an artificial leg. In order to raise money and awareness he decided he would run across Canada. He ran a marathon a day. He embarked on his mission on April 12, 1980 and 143 days later was forced to stop after discovering that his cancer had spread to his lungs. His goal was to raise 22 million dollars by the time he reached the Pacific Ocean. Despite not being able to do so, he was still able to reach 1.7 by the time he had to quit. Instead of just coming to terms with the fact that he was unable to continue running, he continued to believe that even more people will contribute if they watching him suffer while his cancer took a toll on his health. He was right. 35 years later, 650 million dollars have been raised in honor of Terry Fox. The Terry Fox run is now the largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research in the world. Terry Fox’s story is just one example out of millions of people who have turned a difficulty into greatness. Even though Terry was able to fight through his cancer and continue playing sports, he was not able to fulfill his goal of running across Canada. Still, he was able to make a lasting impact into today’s world. Today, the cure rate for young patients has increased from fifteen percent to eighty percent and seventy percent for older patients. He brought much awareness to an illness that at time was unknown to most people. Instead of his hardship resulting in him being lazy and excusable, it made him stubborn and strong
