According to the Index the gross domestic product “...measures all goods and services produced by a country, GDP cannot measures the importance of learning, the safety and vitality of our communities, the health of our children, or the quality of our environment. GDP simply does not capture all of the things we care about and contribute to our overall quality of life” (Canadian Index of Wellbeing 2014). Based on this the wellbeing of people in Ontario cannot be determined solely on the analysis of gross domestic product but also needs to incorporate other factors that have an impact on their everyday lives like what is being done through the Canadian Index of Wellbeing. An example of how the Canadian Index of Wellbeing is a better measure of the reality of peoples’ lives and work in Ontario in comparison to the GDP is the domain of living standard. When looking at the analysis of living standards in the CIW it can be determined that GDP is not an accurate measure of the wellbeing of those in Ontario. This is due to the fact that though the gross domestic product appears to have increased and remain stable over the seventeen year period in comparison the living conditions of Ontario residents has instead rapidly decreased. The Canadian Index of Wellbeing is able to contrast the quality of the economy through the display of the gross domestic product to the other factors shown, while also showing how these factors and GDP relate to the wellbeing of residents in Ontario. Through this contrast it is shown that the wellbeing of Canadians is not always associated with the economy, proving to me that other factors need to be taken into account when considering the health and wellbeing of Ontario citizens. Not only do I see these factors as a beneficial method in defining the wellbeing of citizens in Ontario but I feel these are accurate measures in defining Ontario’s wellbeing because of the way the information was organised and put together. The information expressed in the Canadian Index of Wellbeing was put together by the efforts and research of national leaders and organizations, international research experts and by hundreds of Canadians
